Required German skills

Proof of German language skills at enrolment stage

To enrol directly for a degree at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences applicants must prove that they have sufficient German language skills (except for applications for degree programmes that stipulate proof of English language skills).

Foreign students can prove their linguistic ability by submitting one of the following documents:

  • German Language Test for the Admission of Foreign Study Applicants (DSH). DSH examinations with different levels must indicate that the student has reached at least level DSH-2.
  • TestDaF (German as a Foreign Language Test): the result in each of the subtests must be at least level 4,
  • Goethe Certificate C2: major German Language Diploma (“Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom”),
  • German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs – Level II (DSD II): all sub-areas at level C1,
  • telc German C1 university (“telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule”) certificate,
  • A pass in the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test).

An original of one of these certificates must be presented at enrolment. If you do not meet these requirements, you are eligible to join a DSH preparatory course.

Proof of German language skills at application stage

Applicants who did not gain their higher education entrance qualification at a German school or a German-language school abroad must prove that they hold one of the following language certificates when they apply:

  • The Goethe B2 certificate/telc B2 certificate pursuant to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • C1 certificate from a private institute. Applicants with a certificate from a private language institute must take an additional language test at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Please make an appointment for your language test at the DSH advisory point (DSH-Beratungsstelle).

Please note that a certificate of attendance of a German language course is not adequate for applying!
